Reggie Bush to be Officially Reinstated as 2005 Heisman Trophy Winner

Following reports by ESPN, the Heisman Trust has officially announced the reinstatement of Reggie Bush’s 2005 Heisman Trophy. The trophy was stripped after an NCAA investigation revealed Bush received improper benefits during his time at USC. USC was forced to vacate its 2004 national title as a result.

The Heisman Trust’s reversal is attributed to the significant changes in college football, particularly the introduction of NIL rights in 2021. Bush has been vocal in advocating for the return of his trophy and the restoration of his college football records.

As a standout tailback for the Trojans, Bush scored 42 touchdowns over three seasons and averaged 8.5 yards per carry. ESPN reports that USC will receive a replica of the trophy for display in Heritage Hall, while Bush will regain possession of his original award.

Despite the reinstatement, the restoration of Bush’s reputation remains to be determined. In August, he filed a defamation lawsuit against the NCAA, alleging malicious attacks on his character. The suit hinges on a statement by the NCAA asserting that Bush’s college records could not be restored due to a “pay-for-play” arrangement.

Bush expressed his desire to be recognized alongside other Heisman Trophy winners, but acknowledged that his full reinstatement wouldn’t be complete without the trophy. More updates on this developing story are expected in the future.
