Regina Council Approves Indigenous Ceremonial Site Designation

In a move demonstrating its commitment to reconciliation, Regina City Council has unanimously approved a motion to designate a piece of city land at Kings Park campground as an Indigenous ceremonial site. The initiative, proposed by Piapot First Nation elder Harry Francis, aims to provide a dedicated space for ceremonies within the city, recognizing their significance in fostering Indigenous identity and cultural revitalization. Francis emphasized the need for such a site, as previous ceremonial grounds near Paul Dojack Youth Centre have become unavailable due to flooding. City manager Niki Anderson highlighted the importance of supporting Indigenous culture and land connections in the reconciliation process. The motion passed with six members of the executive council voting in favor, while four were absent or away. This designation and the hosting of sweat ceremonies represent tangible steps towards building trust and accountability in the reconciliation process.
