Amidst the bustling restaurants and businesses of Regina’s downtown, concerns about safety have often deterred people from visiting the area. Concerns range from lack of parking to significant crime, with business owners reporting frequent incidents of vandalism and other issues. To address these concerns, Regina police are implementing a new program with alternate response officers dedicated to downtown assistance and patrolling. These officers will provide visibility, assist vulnerable individuals, offer enforcement support, and aid in investigations.
The program, which has been successful in Saskatoon for two years, will see the Regina constables equipped with a distinct uniform and unarmed. They will work alongside regular police officers to enhance safety measures in the area. Business owners are hopeful that the increased presence of officers will act as a deterrent to crime and dysfunctional behavior. The new officers are expected to commence their duties in the fall, bringing much-needed support to downtown Regina.
