In a close game against a division rival, Bob Melvin had to rely on an unconventional bullpen combination of Erik Miller, Sean Hjelle, and Nick Avila on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, Miller allowed the two decisive runs, rendering Hjelle and Avila’s three scoreless innings moot in a 5-3 loss to the Diamondbacks.
After the game, Melvin informed Avila that he would be returning to Triple-A to make room for Luke Jackson, who was activated from the injured list on Monday. Jackson’s return is a significant addition to the bullpen, especially considering the Giants’ current injury woes. Melvin praised Jackson’s experience in late-game and setup roles.
Jackson had two scoreless innings in rehab appearances with Single-A San Jose this week. Additionally, Mitch White, acquired in a waiver trade with Toronto, is expected to arrive Tuesday, further bolstering a unit that has been among the league’s worst.
The Giants’ bullpen ERA of 5.56 is second-worst in the majors, ahead of only the Phillies (5.78). The heavy reliance on rookies Avila, Miller, Landen Roupp, and Kai-Wei Teng has contributed to these struggles. In their combined 40 innings pitched, the Giants have allowed 33 runs (31 earned).
Focusing on the more experienced relievers – Camilo Doval, Taylor Rogers, Tyler Rogers, and Ryan Walker – the Giants’ bullpen ERA improves to 4.06. However, this is still only good for 19th in the majors.
Melvin acknowledged the inconsistency of his bullpen but attributed it partly to the limited availability of certain pitchers. He expressed optimism that Jackson’s return and the potential addition of White would bring stability to the relief corps.
