Renowned lawyer and political expert Abdul Ghafoor Noorani passed away on Thursday at the age of 93. His death sparked an outpouring of condolences on social media, with the loss felt particularly deeply in Kashmir.
Noorani was a man of immense intellect and wide-ranging expertise, earning recognition for his contributions to law, history, and political science. His insights into the complexities of Kashmir were particularly noteworthy. He authored over a dozen books, including ‘The Kashmir Question’, ‘Ministers’ Misconduct and Constitutional Questions’, and ‘Citizens’ Rights’. His most recent work, ‘The RSS: A Menace to India’, was published in 2019.
Noorani began his career as a High Court judge in 1953, quickly establishing himself as a leading legal mind. He was deeply knowledgeable about constitutional matters and devoted much of his life to writing about legal, political, and historical issues.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Noorani played a vital role in various significant legal cases. He defended Sheikh Abdullah of Kashmir during his prolonged detention and represented former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi before the Bombay High Court in a case against political rival J Jayalalitha.
Noorani’s passing marks the loss of a towering figure in India’s legal and political landscape. His legacy as a scholar, commentator, and advocate will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.
In the words of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, “Sorry to hear about the demise of A G Noorani Sb earlier today. Noorani Sb was a man of letters, an accomplished lawyer, a scholar & a political commentator. He wrote extensively on matters of law and on subjects like Kashmir, RSS and the constitution. May Allah grant him highest place in Jannat.”
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi also mourned Noorani’s passing, stating, “AG Noorani, a giant among scholars has passed away. I learnt a great deal from him, from the constitution, to Kashmir, to China & even the art of appreciating good food. May Allah grant him maghfirah.”
