Senator Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina, issued a dire warning about the U.S. border crisis during an event at the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Wednesday. Speaking at a South Carolina GOP delegation breakfast, Scott expressed concern about the influx of individuals from countries like Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Lebanon crossing the southern border, stating, “We have men from Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon crossing…our southern border.” He went on to assert, “I believe we have sleeper cells in this nation as a result of Joe Biden.” Scott’s remarks come amid heightened security measures for former President Trump following intelligence reports of an Iranian plot to assassinate him. Law enforcement sources told Fox News that Trump’s Secret Service protection has been bolstered in recent weeks due to these concerns, although Iran has denied any involvement. Scott’s warning of terror threats at the border aligns with statements made by FBI Director Chris Wray to Congress in March. Wray acknowledged that criminals have crossed the southwestern border, stating, “There is a particular network where some of the overseas facilitators of the smuggling network have ISIS ties that we’re very concerned about, and that we’ve been spending an enormous amount of effort with our partners to investigate.” Scott’s speech coincides with the third day of the RNC, with Wednesday’s theme focusing on national security. Border security is expected to be a key topic of discussion as Republicans continue to criticize the Biden administration’s handling of the migrant crisis. Scott emphasized the gravity of the situation, asking the audience, “How many of y’all have a back door?” He then posed, “You see, my back door is locked. Anybody disagree with that?” The crowd responded with a resounding “no.” Scott continued, “If you won’t leave your back door unlocked at night, why would we leave the back door of the greatest nation on the planet unlocked?” He went on to highlight the presence of foreign nationals from other continents, stating, “If we, and I believe that we do, if we have a national security risk that’s across our southern border, think about this…we have 100,000 Chinese nationals that have crossed our southern border.” While Republicans and some moderate Democrats have criticized the Biden administration’s approach to the border crisis, Biden and his allies have accused the GOP of obstructing a bipartisan border security deal.
