Republicans Denounce Democrats for Blocking Disapproval Resolution to Rein in COVID Spending

In an effort to curb wasteful spending, Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) introduced a disapproval resolution under the Congressional Review Act. This resolution aimed to rein in the U.S. Department of Treasury’s misuse of COVID recovery funds. However, Senate Democrats voted down the resolution, a move that has drawn criticism from Republicans.

Schmitt and his fellow Republican senators argue that the continued spending is irresponsible, especially in light of the current economic climate. They point to sky-high inflation and rising interest rates, emphasizing that Congress needs to take action to save taxpayers money. They also criticized the Biden administration’s efforts to extend the deadline for spending the funds, claiming that it would lead to further financial havoc for Americans.

The resolution’s failure is seen by Republicans as a missed opportunity to demonstrate fiscal responsibility. They argue that the Biden administration has shown a disregard for the financial well-being of the nation and that this resolution was an attempt to rein in reckless spending.

The vote on the resolution was 46-49, with all Democrats voting against it. Fox News’ Brianna O’Neil contributed to this report.
