Republicans Push for Garland’s Contempt over Hur Audio Tapes

The House of Representatives is anticipated to vote on holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for his refusal to produce audio recordings of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s interview with President Biden. Republicans maintain that the recordings would provide critical context regarding Biden’s state of mind while handling classified documents. However, Democrats have dismissed the request, labeling it a partisan attempt to politicize the Department of Justice (DOJ).

House Speaker Mike Johnson has proposed a contempt resolution, but he needs the support of all but two Republicans to pass the party-line measure. Republicans also intend to defund the special counsel’s office investigating former President Trump as part of their broader effort to highlight alleged weaponization of the DOJ by Biden’s administration.

In an op-ed published in the Washington Post on Tuesday, Garland indirectly criticized Republicans’ pushback against the DOJ. He stated that recent attacks have escalated beyond public scrutiny and legitimate oversight, and have become baseless, personal, and dangerous. Garland specifically mentioned threats to defund specific department investigations, including the special counsel’s prosecution of former President Trump.
