A Revamped Shoe Sizing System for India: Introducing ‘Bha’
The existing footwear sizing system prevalent in India, based on UK/European and US standards, often presents challenges in providing a comfortable and appropriate fit for Indian feet. To address this issue, a new footwear sizing system tailored specifically to Indian feet is in development, aptly named ‘Bha’ after ‘Bharat’.
Research and Development
A comprehensive survey was conducted between December 2021 and March 2022, encompassing 3D foot scans of over 100,000 individuals across 79 locations. This extensive research provided valuable insights into the size, dimensions, and structure of the average Indian foot. The findings revealed that Indian feet are generally wider than those of individuals in Europe or America.
The Need for a Change
The current footwear sizing system has resulted in a significant proportion of Indians wearing shoes that are either too large or inadequately fitting. This mismatch has led to discomfort, injuries, and foot health issues, particularly among the elderly and people with diabetes.
The ‘Bha’ Shoe Sizing System
The ‘Bha’ shoe sizing system is a simplified approach that introduces eight footwear sizes tailored to accommodate different age groups. This standardization aims to provide a better fit for approximately 85% of Indians. The new system also promises greater comfort, wider dimensions, and an additional 5mm allowance for foot length.
Sizes and Production
The ‘Bha’ system comprises eight sizes:
– Infants (0-1 year)
– Toddlers (1-3 years)
– Small children (4-6 years)
– Children (7-11 years)
– Girls (12-13 years)
– Boys (12-14 years)
– Women (14 years and above)
– Men (15 years and above)
Production will primarily focus on sizes III to VIII, catering to the needs of the majority of Indians. The ‘Bha’ system is expected to simplify manufacturing by eliminating half-sizes, leading to increased efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Improved Comfort and Health
The introduction of the ‘Bha’ shoe sizing system is a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by Indians in finding well-fitting footwear. The system’s emphasis on comfort and health will not only enhance the wearer’s experience but also contribute to improved foot health outcomes.
