For decades, Britons have been chuckling over the one-liners found on the backs of Penguin biscuits. Now, McVitie’s has unveiled the nation’s favourite Penguin jokes of all time. To mark World Penguin Day (25 April), Brits were asked to vote for the most amusing joke. The winning joke, chosen by a poll of 2,000 adults, is: ‘What was the name of the Emperor Penguin? Julius Freezer’. Other top jokes include: ‘Why can’t penguins fly? Because they are chocolate biscuits’, ‘Why do penguins wear glasses? To help their ice-sight!’, and ‘What do you call 500 penguins in Trafalgar Square? Lost’.
Nearly three-quarters (73%) of Brits read the jokes every time they eat a Penguin biscuit, and nine out of ten people (92%) say they always put a smile on their face. Even the Humboldt penguins at London Zoo’s Penguin Beach got in on the joke, enjoying a comedy show of the top 10 jokes ahead of World Penguin Day.
In addition to the jokes, the Penguin biscuits will now also feature fun penguin facts from ZSL (Zoological Society of London) experts. Adam Woolf at McVitie’s said: ‘Penguin biscuits, and their famous one-liner jokes, have been putting a smile on the faces of families for decades. What better way to celebrate them this World Penguin Day than with our proud partners ZSL – who are working across the world to protect animals just like Humboldt penguins.’
The partnership between McVitie’s Penguin and ZSL aims to connect more families with wildlife and inspire children to care for the planet, while also funding ZSL’s vital work.
