We all know that feeling: you’re trying to get some sleep, but your pillow is just past its prime, limp and lifeless. You might be tempted to toss it and buy a new one, but before you do, consider this affordable hack that can breathe new life into your favorite pillow.
Rhiannon Masters, interior designer and Head of Brand at Piglet in Bed, has a simple solution: a tennis ball and a sock! It’s surprisingly effective, and you can find a tennis ball for less than a dollar.
Here’s how it works:
1.
Stuff a tennis ball into an old tube sock and tie the top.
2.
Toss the sock with the tennis ball into your dryer with your tired pillows.
3.
Run the dryer on a medium heat cycle.
The tennis ball will bounce around the drum, essentially beating out the lumps in your pillows, restoring them to their former fluffy glory.
Masters also recommends daily fluffing to keep your pillows looking and feeling fresh. It sounds like extra work, but it can be easily incorporated into your morning routine. Just hold the sides of the pillow, compress and decompress it, then flip it over and repeat. A mere 30 seconds will give your pillow a noticeable boost.
If you use multiple pillows, rotate them regularly, and change the side you sleep on at least twice a month. This helps prevent uneven wear and tear.
For long-lasting comfort, consider investing in wool-filled pillows. Down or synthetic pillows can become lumpy due to sweat, but wool naturally regulates temperature, keeping you cool in the heat and warm in the cold. This means less moisture buildup, resulting in pillows that stay fluffier for longer.
By following these simple tips, you can extend the life of your pillows and enjoy a more comfortable sleep for years to come.
