Rhinebeck, nestled in Dutchess County, New York, has always held a special place in the heart of floral enthusiasts. Known as the “violet capital of the world” at the turn of the century, its gardeners meticulously cultivated millions of purple blooms, sending them to women in New York and Philadelphia who adorned their dresses with these delicate flowers. During Easter, the demand was so high that the freight train from Rhinebeck was affectionately nicknamed the “Violet Express.”
This rich floral heritage continues to resonate in the work of Rhinebeck resident Ariel Dearie, a floral artist whose talent has captivated the world. She has crafted breathtaking arrangements for prestigious fashion houses like Loewe, Michael Kors, and Bvlgari, and has brought her artistry to renowned cultural institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Frick Collection. Her impressive list of collaborators includes Annie Leibovitz, for whom she created an elaborate flora-inspired sword for their induction into the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, as well as Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs.
In Vogue’s December issue, guest-edited by Marc Jacobs, photographer Stephen Shore, also a Rhinebeck resident, captured Dearie’s painterly floral creations against the town’s unassuming backdrop.
