Rihanna’s Jersey Style: How to Make a Sports Uniform Chic

With the Olympics in full swing, it’s the perfect time to embrace your inner sports fan and rock your favorite jersey. And who better to take inspiration from than Rihanna, the queen of effortless cool? She’s been spotted sporting various jerseys lately, from a SCOTT-SRAM racing top to an Outkast-themed basketball jersey, proving that athletic wear can be elevated to high fashion. Even as a non-sports enthusiast, I was drawn to Rihanna’s approach. There’s something undeniably stylish about pairing a jersey with unexpected pieces like purple cargo pants or a sleek blazer. Her outfits manage to strike the perfect balance between sporty and trendy, making high-style pieces feel nonchalant and approachable. Rihanna’s go-to styling move seems to be juxtaposing dressy and casual elements, creating an intriguing mix. Intrigued and surrounded by nothing but Olympic coverage, I wanted to explore if I, someone utterly clueless about sports, could also make a jersey look stylish and cool. So, I delved into my closet and discovered a Toronto Raptors jersey designed by Drew House, a Canadian brand, along with a classic hockey jersey that I’ve always admired but never knew how to style. The key to pulling it off, I learned, is layering pieces that feel unexpected and even slightly clash with the jersey. I paired my teal Section 35 jersey with green cargo pants, Gucci horsebit loafers, and a plaid Collina Strada bag. To my surprise, it all worked together seamlessly. For my next attempt, I resurrected my Toronto Maple Leafs jersey, a gift, and paired it with denim shorts, socks and loafers, and a striped Gucci Jackie bag. (The addition of a designer bag is a direct nod to Rihanna’s style.) On their own, these jerseys couldn’t feel more opposite to my personal style; I prefer a snazzy button-up shirt in my everyday life. But combined with some of my cooler streetwear pieces, I found the jersey surprisingly easy and comfortable to wear. Will I be rocking team uniforms to the office every day? Unlikely. But for a casual weekend or errands, it’s a cool, laidback fashion vibe that I can get behind. One thing, though: If you see me out and about in a jersey, don’t ask me anything about the team, okay? I know nothing about scores or rankings—only that Rihanna approves.
