Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, over the latter’s remarks regarding representation in the Miss India beauty pageant. Gandhi, speaking at the Samvidhan Samman Sammelan in Prayagraj, had pointed out the lack of representation of Dalit and Adivasi women in the competition, advocating for a nationwide caste census.
Rijiju, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), shared a clip of Gandhi’s remarks and responded with sharp criticism, stating, “Now, He wants reservations in Miss India competitions, Films, sports! It is not only an issue of ‘Bal Budhi’ (childish), but people who cheer him are equally responsible too!”
The Union Minister further asserted that Gandhi’s call for reservation in such fields is a divisive tactic and cannot be accepted. He emphasized the Modi government’s commitment to inclusivity, citing the appointment of India’s first Tribal President, an OBC Prime Minister, and the record number of SC/ST ministers in the cabinet. Rijiju further stated that the Supreme Court will not be allowed to alter reservations in the IAS, IPS, and IFS services.
Gandhi, during his speech at the Samvidhan Samman Sammelan, reiterated his call for a nationwide caste census and the removal of the 50% cap on reservations. He argued that without accurate data, it’s impossible to address the issue of representation fairly. He claimed that 90% of the population, despite having the skills and talent, is excluded from the system due to the lack of a caste census.
The exchange between Rijiju and Gandhi highlights the ongoing debate on reservation policies in India and the role of caste in various spheres of life. Gandhi’s remarks, while raising valid points about representation, have been met with criticism from the BJP, who view them as an attempt to exploit the issue for political gain.
