Rishi Sunak’s £750 Backpack Sparks Controversy During UK Election Campaign

Amidst the ongoing UK national election campaign, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s accessory choice has sparked controversy. Sunak was spotted carrying a Tumi backpack weighing 750 Pounds (approximately 79,497) during his visit to one of the country’s poorest areas. The monogrammed backpack, bearing his initials ‘RS,’ drew attention due to its high price tag, raising questions about Sunak’s commitment to ‘levelling up’ and allocating funds to deprived communities.

Social media users expressed mixed reactions to Sunak’s backpack. Some criticized him for displaying his wealth during a campaign focused on addressing regional disparities. Others defended his choice, arguing that he is entitled to own expensive belongings. Sunak’s expensive backpack is not the first instance of his wealth being scrutinized during the campaign. In July 2022, he wore £490 Prada shoes while visiting a building site.

Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, are considered one of the wealthiest couples in the UK, with a collective wealth estimated at £651 million. This is significantly higher than the estimated wealth of King Charles III. Sunak’s wealth has become a topic of discussion, particularly in light of his policies and commitment to reducing inequality.
