In a restoration that is both splendiferous and gloriumptious, the weather-beaten gate of Roald Dahl’s family home has been returned to its fairytale form on The Repair Shop. The gate, once a proud entrance to the Grade II-listed thatched cottage in Grendon Underwood, Buckinghamshire, had long since disappeared, neglected under the hedge. New homeowner Hannah Smart, a lifelong fan of Dahl, unwittingly unearthed the gate while cutting back the hedge. The gate, as Hannah brought it to the show, was a mere pile of sticks, its joints broken and covered in green mold. However, skilled carpenter Will Kirk took on the challenge of restoring the gate to its former glory. Using his expertise, Will pieced together the mangled jigsaw puzzle, transforming the gate into a testament to Dahl’s legacy. The restored gate, now back in its rightful place, has elicited comments from villagers that they can finally see the house for the first time in years. Hannah, overwhelmed by the gate’s transformation, feels a sense of duty as guardian of the house and its history. She is honored to have played a part in preserving Roald Dahl’s childhood home for future generations.
