New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has disavowed his alma mater, Columbia University, over the continuing pro-Palestinian protests occurring on campus. Kraft expressed his loss of faith in the school’s handling of the situation in a Monday tweet.
Columbia has seen a surge of emphatic pro-Palestinian protests for a sixth consecutive day on Monday, despite President Minouche Shafik’s decision to call the police on protesters on Thursday. The protests have escalated in size and intensity, prompting Shafik to acknowledge that the “decibel of our disagreements has only increased in recent days.” As a result, the school has opted to make all Monday classes virtual.
Shafik has also condemned the use of antisemitic language, stating that “appropriate action will be taken” against those responsible. However, her handling of the protests has drawn criticism from New York Republicans, led by Rep. Elise Stefanik, who have penned a letter calling for her resignation. The letter asserts that the ongoing situation is a symptom of Shafik’s lax enforcement of policy and double standards.
