The on-again couple went on a low-key date, embracing a sense of normalcy and comfort that stands in stark contrast to the carefully curated displays of affection often seen in the celebrity world.
He took photos of her standing barefoot before Paolo Veronese’s ‘The Wedding at Cana’ – a Renaissance painting depicting the wedding feast where Jesus was said to have turned water into wine – and she posted them on Instagram. The miracle of their reunion went on to accrue more than three million likes in less than 24 hours. It is no coincidence that this duo has been photographed in an accretion of coordinating outfits since reuniting. The spectacle of a celeb romance is mediated through images like these. See: Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and just about everything that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have ever been papped wearing. These people are dressing for themselves and for the cameras, and the “couple goals!” headlines write themselves.
Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse, however, are perhaps the antidote to these manicured displays of public affection. They were yesterday afternoon photographed strolling through Los Angeles wearing an unremarkable, haphazard assortment of clothing that most sleep-deprived parents will relate to. (Waterhouse in a dog-walking jacket, a Tommy Hilfiger tee and sweatpants; Pattinson in a khaki shirt, an MC Esher-printed tee and Adidas shorts.) These two are not dressing for public entertainment, but for the comfort of their own private bubble. Talk about “couple goals.”
