Robert Stephenson Undergoes Tommy John Surgery, Angels Season Sidelined
Angels reliever Robert Stephenson’s season has come to an abrupt end after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The injury occurred during a rehab outing on April 13th, and an internal brace was used to support the reconstructed ulnar collateral ligament. Stephenson, who was expected to be the primary setup man for closer Carlos Estévez, will now miss the entire 2023 season.
The 31-year-old Stephenson signed a three-year, $33 million deal with the Angels in January, earning the contract after a stellar performance with the Tampa Bay Rays last season. In 38⅓ innings with the Rays, Stephenson had a 2.35 ERA with 60 strikeouts and eight walks.
The Angels will now be without Stephenson’s services for the foreseeable future, and his absence will undoubtedly affect the team’s bullpen depth. The Angels have an option to bring Stephenson back in 2027 for $2.5 million, but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to return to his previous level of performance after the surgery.
In other news, Angels manager Ron Washington has shuffled the lineup, moving Mike Trout to the leadoff spot in an attempt to spark the team’s offense. Washington also provided an update on third baseman Anthony Rendon, who is out with a hamstring strain and is still awaiting a final diagnosis. First baseman Nolan Schanuel has shown signs of improvement at the plate, posting a five-game hitting streak. The Angels hope that Schanuel can continue to produce and provide some much-needed offensive support.
