Rockies’ Struggles Continue Despite Rodgers’ Grand Slam

The Colorado Rockies have started the 2023 season with an abysmal 5-18 record, marking the first time since the 1931 Cincinnati Reds that a team has trailed in their first 23 games of the regular season. Despite a recent 7-4 victory over the San Diego Padres, the Rockies’ struggles continue, as six of their players have been striking out more than average this season.

One bright spot for the Rockies has been second baseman Brendan Rodgers, who hit a grand slam in the victory over the Padres. However, Rodgers’ overall performance has been underwhelming, as he has a .197 batting average and 20 strikeouts in 71 at-bats. This is a far cry from the expectations that were placed on Rodgers, who was once considered one of the top prospects in baseball.

The Rockies’ struggles have been evident on both sides of the ball, as their starting pitching has been inconsistent and their offense has been anemic. If Rodgers and the rest of the Rockies cannot improve their performance, the team faces the prospect of a historically bad season. The Rockies are off to their worst start since 2005 and have trailed in all of their games this year through 24 games. Only the 1912 St. Louis Browns trailed in more (28).

Rodgers’ grand slam may bring a boat of confidence to a team that’s been desperately searching to find that missing link all season long. It was great for Rodgers to contribute to the team’s much-needed win last night. However, he must continue to play well to help this struggling Rockies team win.
