Roma Fires De Rossi, Appoints Juric in Surprise Move

In a move that sent shockwaves through the football world, AS Roma fired coach Daniele De Rossi on Wednesday, just four games into the Serie A season. The decision came as a surprise, especially considering De Rossi had only been appointed in January to replace Jose Mourinho and had signed a contract extension in June that ran until 2026-27.

De Rossi, a Roma legend and former captain, had impressed during the second half of last season, transforming the team into a more attacking force. However, the Giallorossi have struggled to find their rhythm this season, failing to win any of their opening four matches. Roma’s poor start, which saw them lose to Empoli at home and draw with Juventus and Genoa, ultimately led to the decision to part ways with De Rossi.

The club announced in a statement that the decision was made “in the best interests of the team, to get back on the desired path as soon as possible at a time when the season is still in its early stages.” Roma expressed gratitude for De Rossi’s contributions, stating he “will always be at home at the Giallorossi club” and thanking him for his “passion and dedication.”

Stepping into the hot seat is Ivan Juric, a seasoned manager with experience at Genoa, Hellas Verona, and Torino. Juric has signed a contract until the end of the season and faces a daunting task in turning around Roma’s fortunes. The Giallorossi are currently in 16th place with just three points and will be looking to Juric to provide a much-needed spark.

His first test will be a crucial home match against Serie A leaders Udinese on Sunday. Juric’s arrival marks the first managerial change in Serie A this season and will be closely watched as he tries to steer Roma back on course.

Roma’s struggles come at a time when the club is also facing significant changes off the pitch. Romelu Lukaku’s loan spell ended after last season, and Paulo Dybala, despite considering a move to Saudi Arabia, ultimately remained with the club.

The club’s American owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, have often made surprising decisions during their ownership, and the dismissal of De Rossi only adds to the unpredictable nature of Roma’s recent history.
