Ronaldo’s Legacy Lives On: Garnacho Honors Idol in Goal Celebrations

While Cristiano Ronaldo’s time in the Premier League may have come to an end, his legacy continues to inspire younger generations. One such player is Alejandro Garnacho, the Argentine starlet for Manchester United. Garnacho has occasionally been seen replicating Ronaldo’s famous “Siu” celebration after scoring goals, and even plays in the same left-wing position that CR7 made his own. For Garnacho, Ronaldo remains an idol and the “Greatest of all time,” so it’s no surprise that he would want to emulate his idol.

But what did Ronaldo himself think about Garnacho’s desire to use his celebration? Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has provided an intriguing anecdote that sheds light on this. According to Dalot, during the 2022 Europa League campaign, Garnacho approached Ronaldo before a match against Real Sociedad and asked if he could use his celebration when he scored.

“Before a game against Real Sociedad, Garnacho went to Cristiano Ronaldo to ask if he could celebrate like him when he scored a goal,” Dalot said on the Cronache di Spogliatoio podcast.

“Cristiano turned around, tapped me on the shoulder, and said, ‘Did you hear that? He wants to celebrate like me! Shall we say yes?'”

Ronaldo’s response was met with enthusiasm, and when Garnacho scored his first senior goal against Real Sociedad, his dream came true. Poetically, the assist came from none other than Cristiano Ronaldo himself. An ecstatic Garnacho rushed out to perform CR7’s celebration as planned, but surprisingly, instead of the iconic “Siu,” he executed Ronaldo’s “nap” celebration instead.
