Rory McIlroy, the world’s second-ranked golfer and a four-time major winner, will participate in this year’s Travelers Championship, according to an announcement made on Tuesday by the tournament. The 34-year-old will join a prestigious group of golfers that already includes Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, and Patrick Cantlay. The tournament, designated as one of the PGA Tour’s Signature Events, is expected to attract many of the biggest names in golf. At the Travelers event last year, McIlroy achieved his best-ever finish, placing seventh. Despite his strong performance, McIlroy generated controversy with his remarks about the TPC River Highlands course, claiming it was too easy. “I don’t particularly like when a tournament is like this,” McIlroy stated following the final round. “Unfortunately technology has outdated this course. Especially with the little bit of rain we’ve had, it has rendered it somewhat obsolete… When we play on courses like this, they simply don’t provide the same level of difficulty as they once did.” Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President of Travelers, praised McIlroy for his unwavering support of the tournament over the years, saying, “I have so much appreciation and respect for Rory, who has been a strong supporter of our tournament over the years. “He’s a good friend, someone who speaks his mind, and provides suggestions on how things can be further improved. As one of the most accomplished players in the world, having him in our tournament field is fantastic news for our fans.” On Tuesday, the Northern Ireland native also made headlines with the announcement of his return to the PGA Tour policy board, from which he had abruptly resigned in November following the news of the impending PGA Tour-LIV merger. McIlroy has made the cut in all eight of his starts this season, with a third-place finish at the Valero Texas Open being his best result so far. With 24 career PGA Tour victories and four major titles, including the 2011 U.S. Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship, and 2014 PGA Championship, McIlroy has established himself as one of the best golfers in the world. Additionally, he has received the PGA Tour Player of the Year award three times (2012, 2014, 2019) and the FedEx Cup Championship three times (2016, 2019, 2022). “Rory is one of golf’s biggest and brightest stars, winning major championships, tournaments all over the world, and leading Team Europe to victories in the Ryder Cup,” said Nathan Grube, Tournament Director of the Travelers Championship. “He’s someone who has fans everywhere he plays, and I know he’ll receive strong support this year at TPC River Highlands.”
