The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ quest for the Grey Cup gets underway with the commencement of their rookie training camp in Saskatoon. Head coach Corey Mace, who is assessing potential CFL roster additions, expressed his anticipation for the camp and the opportunity to observe the new players in action. The team is determined to turn things around after two consecutive disappointing seasons that saw them miss the playoffs.
Ajou Ajou, a 2024 draft pick, is among the new faces hoping to make an impression during the camp. “My goal is to learn from the veterans and improve as a player through their experiences and insights,” said Ajou, who brings NCAA experience to the Riders, along with former Notre Dame and XFL quarterback Jack Coan. “It was a blast to be out there with the team,” Coan said. “I felt like I hadn’t played football in ages, so it was great to be back on the field.”
The camp also provides an opportunity for second-year players like receiver Kendall Watson to regain their footing. “It’s helpful and reduces my anxiety,” said Watson after Day 1 of the camp. “It makes me more confident about what’s happening.”
With the team coming together for the first time this season, there is a renewed emphasis on culture and authenticity from both players and coaching staff. “We promote competition in everything we do, so you can’t shy away from it,” said Mace. “Embrace it and give it your all.”
The rookie camp will take place at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon until Friday, with the main camp commencing on Sunday.
