Routes World 2024: Bahrain Takes Center Stage in Global Aviation

The skies above Bahrain are buzzing with excitement as the 29th edition of Routes World, the world’s premier aviation event, has officially touched down in the Kingdom. This year’s conference, taking place from October 6 to 8, marks a historic moment for Bahrain, as it becomes the first country in the region to host this prestigious gathering.

Over 2,300 delegates representing 230 airlines and 530 airports from across the globe have descended upon the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre. Their mission? To discuss the future of the aviation industry and explore ways to enhance global air connectivity, shaping the future of air travel.

The event is a collaborative effort between Bahrain International Airport (BIA), managed by Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), and the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB).

The opening ceremony was a star-studded affair, graced by prominent figures including Mohamed bin Thamer AlKaabi, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications; Fatima bint Jaafar Al Sairafi, Minister of Tourism; Sara Ahmed Buhiji, CEO of BTEA; and Khalid Hussain Taqi, Chairman of Gulf Air Group (GFG).

In his welcoming address, Minister AlKaabi emphasized the vital role of Routes World as a platform for shaping the future of global aviation. He highlighted Bahrain’s strategic location and capabilities, which are essential in fostering a sustainable and thriving aviation industry. He also underlined the event’s significance in showcasing Bahrain as a leading hub in the region.

Echoing Minister AlKaabi’s sentiments, Minister Al Sairafi expressed how the event aligns perfectly with Bahrain’s Tourism Strategy 2022-2026, strengthening the link between tourism and aviation. She expressed confidence that the conference would foster the exchange of expertise, ultimately contributing to the development of the aviation sector.

“Bahrain is committed to becoming a premier destination for conferences and exhibitions,” declared Al Sairafi, emphasizing the role of the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre, the most modern facility in the Middle East, in hosting world-class events and enhancing the country’s tourism infrastructure.

Mohamed Yousif AlBinfalah, CEO of BAC, underscored the significance of hosting Routes World 2024 for Bahrain’s aviation, tourism, and logistics sectors. He stressed the collaborative efforts of government entities to connect airports, airlines, and destinations, solidifying Bahrain’s position as a leading tourism hub.

“The event showcases Bahrain’s vision for future global air connectivity,” AlBinfalah declared. “With our geographical advantages and cutting-edge infrastructure, we aim to attract international carriers and travelers.”

The next three days will see attendees engaging in over 9,000 scheduled meetings, including representatives from 80 of the world’s top 100 airlines. More than 40 speakers, including keynote addresses from five airline CEOs, will share their insights and perspectives.

The first day of the conference included insightful panel discussions focusing on the rapid growth trajectory of the Arabian Gulf region. Dr. Jeffrey Goh, CEO of GFG, contributed to a dialogue on the future of airline development, while another session explored the expanding role of technology in logistics. The Chief Executive Officer of BAC discussed the importance of airfreight and cargo operations in enhancing global connectivity and operational efficiency.

As Routes World 2024 unfolds, it promises to solidify Bahrain’s position as a distinctive tourist destination and enhance its role in the global aviation landscape. The event offers a unique opportunity for stakeholders to connect, collaborate, and drive growth in passenger traffic, shaping the future of air travel and cementing Bahrain’s place as a key player in the world of aviation.
