Royal Caribbean Group, renowned for its innovative cruise experiences, has announced a strategic partnership with Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku to build a fourth Icon Class ship, slated for delivery in 2027. This agreement also includes options for the construction of a fifth and sixth Icon Class vessel, showcasing the company’s ambitious growth plans and commitment to its popular Icon Class.
The announcement underscores the remarkable success of the Icon Class, a revolutionary concept in cruising that blends the best aspects of beach retreats, resort escapes, and theme park adventures. The first ship in the class, launched in January 2024, has exceeded expectations in terms of guest satisfaction and financial performance.
Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Building on the incredible momentum and market response to the launch of Icon of the Seas and the excitement for its sister ship, Star of the Seas, coming in 2025, we’re thrilled to join with Meyer Turku once again to expand our roster of Icon Class ships and continue our future growth plans.”
The agreement has been met with positive reactions from both Finnish and Royal Caribbean executives. Petteri Orpo, Prime Minister of Finland, highlighted the positive impact the partnership will have on the country’s economy and employment. Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku, noted the importance of the order for the future of shipbuilding in Finland, emphasizing the shipyard’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
This latest order further strengthens the longstanding partnership between Royal Caribbean Group and Meyer Turku. Over the past 28 years, Meyer Turku has built 21 ships for Royal Caribbean Group, a testament to the success of their collaboration. The agreement signifies a continuation of this successful partnership and reaffirms the shared commitment to delivering best-in-class vessels.
The expansion of the Icon Class fleet signifies Royal Caribbean Group’s commitment to providing transformative vacation experiences for its guests. The company’s focus on moderate capacity growth aims to make once-in-a-lifetime vacations a reality for a wider audience. Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, aptly summarized the company’s vision, stating, “Icon of the Seas is unlike anything the world has seen before, and we’re just getting started. We are leading the vacation industry in developing new experiences for our guests to create lifelong memories, and we continue dreaming and evolving to deliver more ways to chill and thrill.”
The agreement is contingent upon customary conditions, including securing financing. However, the announcement marks a significant milestone for both Royal Caribbean Group and Meyer Turku, underscoring the commitment to building innovative and sustainable cruise ships that will shape the future of the industry.
