Holger Rune, the 21-year-old Danish tennis star ranked 16th in the world, has withdrawn from the Paris 2024 Olympics due to a persistent wrist injury. Rune, who was set to make his Olympic debut in Paris, announced his withdrawal on Wednesday, expressing his disappointment and stating he had played with the pain throughout the clay and grass seasons. He explained that he must follow medical recommendations and prioritize his recovery.
Rune’s withdrawal comes after he retired from his quarter-final match at the Hamburg Open last week, trailing against eventual champion Arthur Fils of France. This adds to a growing list of withdrawals from the tennis competition, including world number one Jannik Sinner, who cited tonsillitis as the reason for his absence. Olympic silver medalist Marketa Vondrousova and Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz also pulled out of the tournament earlier this week.
Other notable absences from the Olympic tennis events include world number three Aryna Sabalenka, Ons Jabeur, Emma Raducanu, and Ben Shelton. The Olympic tennis events are scheduled to start on Saturday at Roland Garros in Paris, the day after the opening ceremony.
