Seventh seed Holger Rune’s Wimbledon warm-up was abruptly cut short as he suffered a shocking first-round loss at the Queen’s Club Championships. The 21-year-old Dane fell to Australian Jordan Thompson in a tight three-set match, with the final score reading 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Rune, a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon last year, started strong, securing the opening set after the score was tied at 4-4. However, Thompson elevated his game in the second set, taking it to a tiebreak where he displayed remarkable composure and clinched the set.
Thompson, ranked 43rd in the world, carried his momentum into the final set, racing to a 3-0 lead. He maintained his dominance, securing the victory over the 15th-ranked Rune and simultaneously ending his own five-match losing streak.
This unexpected defeat marks another early exit for Rune in a Grand Slam event. He bowed out in the second round of the Australian Open in January and was knocked out in the fourth round of the French Open earlier in June.
Rune’s disappointment adds intrigue to his upcoming Wimbledon campaign, which takes place from July 1st to July 14th.
