Ranchi University’s (RU) decision to halt intermediate section admissions in 14 constituent colleges has sparked protests from teachers and students. The move has raised concerns about the future of nearly 20,000 students and the livelihoods of over 500 staff members.
The notification, issued on Tuesday, came as a blow to students preparing for the Class X exams this year. They fear that the decision will deprive them of higher education opportunities.
Hundreds of teachers and students gathered on Wednesday to gherao Vice-Chancellor Ajit Kumar Sinha, demanding the withdrawal of the notification. The protestors allege that the decision is against the interests of both teachers and students.
The general secretary of the protesting morcha, Ramanuj Pandey, stated, “The RU decision is irresponsible and short-sighted. It would affect the livelihood of over 500 teaching and non-teaching staffs of the intermediate section under RU.”
The morcha has vowed to oppose the order at various levels.
The protestors argue that the decision is based on the university’s aim to improve its grading by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). “All the constituent colleges of RU would have to undergo NAAC assessment by the end of the year to get funds. In the past, Marwari colleges got a ‘C’ grade from NAAC because it was running an intermediate course. We are aiming for a much higher grade in the NAAC assessment,” VC Sinha explained.
However, the protestors maintain that the university should prioritize the welfare of students and staff over rankings.
Meanwhile, the morcha members also met with minister Alamgir Alam to discuss the issue.
The protest highlights the importance of considering the impact of university decisions on students and staff. It remains to be seen whether the university will reconsider its stance or if the protests will continue.
