Russia’s Defense Ministry has announced the capture of the eastern village of Novomykhailivka in Donetsk, a region annexed by Russia. The ministry stated that the move had improved the tactical situation along the front line. However, Ukraine’s military has refuted these claims, reporting that Russian forces made 23 unsuccessful attempts to break through defensive lines in areas around Novomykhailivka.
In response to the ongoing conflict, EU foreign and defense ministers gathered in Luxembourg to deliberate continued support for Ukraine. The recently approved $61 billion military aid package from the US was welcomed by several ministers. Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the importance of aerial defense assistance, urging allies to explore their stockpiles and expand support.
Ukraine’s head of military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, expressed concern about a potential deterioration in the front line situation in mid-May and early June. While acknowledging the challenges, Budanov stressed that the situation is not catastrophic. Ukraine is facing dwindling resources and manpower, but the US military aid package is expected to provide relief in the coming weeks.
Despite the ongoing military operations, Ukraine continues to prioritize fortification and defense building. Amidst the conflict, US think tank the Institute for the Study of War predicts an intensification of Russian offensive efforts and missile strikes in the near future. The situation remains fluid and volatile, with both sides preparing for potential escalations.
