Ryanair Sues Air Traffic Control Body Nats Over Summer Disruption

Ryanair has initiated legal proceedings against air traffic control organization Nats in response to severe disruptions that affected over 700,000 passengers last summer. On August 28, 2022, a technical glitch within Nats’ systems led to the grounding of flights at UK airports. An interim report released in March from an inquiry into the incident highlighted the absence of multi-agency rehearsals for managing such incidents. Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary expressed the airline’s intention to recover compensation costs from Nats, criticizing the organization’s performance and calling for the resignation of its chief executive. Nats has acknowledged receipt of the legal proceedings stemming from Ryanair’s claim in the High Court. In response to the August incident, aviation organizations have agreed to conduct an industry-wide rehearsal of major flight disruption scenarios. This initiative has received support from the CAA, airlines, and airports, with plans to execute the practice run after the summer season.
