Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s number two tennis player, has added another feather to her cap by winning the US Open title. Her victory over Jessica Pegula in a hard-fought final marks her third Grand Slam championship this year. However, this triumph carries a deeper significance for Sabalenka, as it comes on the heels of a year marked by immense personal loss.
Earlier this year, Sabalenka experienced the tragic death of her former boyfriend, Konstantin Koltsov, a former NHL star who died from apparent suicide at the age of 42. This loss came just five years after the passing of her father, Sergiy, from meningitis at the young age of 43.
In a poignant moment, Sabalenka dedicated her US Open victory to her family, recognizing their unwavering support throughout these challenging times. “After I lost my father, it has always been my goal to put our family name in the history of tennis,” Sabalenka, the 26-year-old Belarusian, said. “Every time I see my name on that trophy, I’m so proud of myself, I’m proud of my family that they never gave up on my dream and that they were doing everything they could to keep me going. I had this opportunity in life so it really means a lot. It has always been my dream.”
On the court, Sabalenka showcased her powerful game, employing her signature blistering serves and aggressive groundstrokes to overwhelm Pegula. Her 40 winners in the final pushed her tournament total to an impressive 205, including a remarkable 36 aces. Her serve, reaching a top speed of 191.5 km/h (119 mph), was the third fastest of the competition.
“I know that I have to go for it. That’s the only way it works for me,” Sabalenka explained. “Every time I stop my arms and the ball flies in the stands, so a long time ago I decided for myself in those important moments I just have to go for it, I have to swing.”
Sabalenka’s US Open victory is a testament to her resilience and the enduring power of family support. It is a moment of triumph that she will surely cherish, a fitting tribute to her loved ones and a testament to her relentless pursuit of excellence in the sport.
