The string of departures from Saint Mary’s College’s men’s basketball program continued on Tuesday night when three-star recruit Zion Sensley decommitted. Sensley, a 6-foot-8 wing from Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco, announced his decision on social media. The news comes as a significant blow to the Gaels, who have already lost several key players since their first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament. Aidan Mahaney, a product of nearby Campolindo High School, entered the transfer portal after two seasons at Saint Mary’s, while forward Joshua Jefferson transferred to Iowa State. Sensley’s decommitment is particularly disappointing as he was expected to contribute immediately next season. The all-Bay Area News Group selection averaged 17.5 points and 6.4 rebounds while leading Riordan to a Central Coast Section Open Division title and an appearance in the NorCal Open championship game this past season. He had been committed to Saint Mary’s since last November. The recent departures have left a void in the Gaels’ roster, with Sensley, Mahaney, and Jefferson all expected to play significant roles next season. Longtime coach Randy Bennett will now have to work to fill the void left by these players, with three-star Prolific Prep guard Mikey Lewis and Australian combo-guard Joshua Dent currently the only high school players committed to Saint Mary’s in the class of 2024.
