Massachusetts is taking a major leap towards its clean energy future with the groundbreaking of the Salem Offshore Wind Terminal. This project, a collaboration between the state, Crowley Wind Services, and the City of Salem, marks a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to renewable energy. The terminal, located on the site of a former oil- and coal-fired power plant, will be transformed into a vital hub for the construction and installation of offshore wind farms, including next-generation floating turbines in the Gulf of Maine.
The groundbreaking ceremony, attended by Governor Maura Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo, and Crowley Wind Services CEO Bob Karl, highlighted the project’s impact on the state’s clean energy goals and economic growth. Governor Healey praised the project’s contribution to creating union jobs and boosting the local economy, while Lieutenant Governor Driscoll highlighted Salem’s role as a leader in the offshore wind industry.
The Salem Offshore Wind Terminal is poised to become one of the few locations capable of supporting both fixed and floating offshore wind projects. This strategic location will serve as a critical link in the supply chain, providing essential services for the growing offshore wind industry in New England. Crowley Wind Services has awarded the general contracting role to the Massachusetts-based joint venture DW White JF White, further strengthening the project’s commitment to local economic development.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the project will create a significant number of jobs, prioritizing local residents, especially those from underserved backgrounds. The terminal is expected to generate 150 jobs during construction and at least eight long-term positions for Crowley employees during operations. During busier periods, an additional 20-30 jobs will be needed for operation and maintenance, with another 60 to 150 jobs available through tenant contractors and their projects. Crowley has already partnered with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Salem High School to provide career training, ensuring a skilled workforce for the emerging offshore wind industry.
The Salem Offshore Wind Terminal is a testament to the collaboration between government, industry, and communities in achieving a clean energy future. The project’s impact extends beyond clean energy goals, revitalizing the Salem waterfront and creating a new economic engine for the region. With its expected operational launch in 2026, the Salem Offshore Wind Terminal is poised to become a model for sustainable development and a cornerstone of Massachusetts’ clean energy transition.
