Salem Offshore Wind Terminal Breaks Ground, Propelling Massachusetts Towards Clean Energy Goals

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, and Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo joined Crowley Wind Services to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Salem Offshore Wind Terminal. This project marks a major milestone in the state’s commitment to clean energy, transforming a former coal-fired power plant into a dynamic hub for the offshore wind industry.

The Salem Offshore Wind Terminal will play a vital role in supporting the construction of offshore wind farms in New England, including future floating turbines in the Gulf of Maine. This strategic location will facilitate the development and deployment of next-generation wind energy technologies. The project is a collaborative effort involving the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), the U.S. Maritime Administration, Crowley Wind Services, and the City of Salem.

The terminal is expected to be operational by 2026 and will generate numerous job opportunities, particularly for local residents, especially those from underrepresented communities. During construction, approximately 150 jobs will be created, with at least eight long-term Crowley employees managing the terminal during operations. During busier periods, an additional 20-30 jobs will be available for operating and maintaining the facility. When projects are underway, 60 to 150 jobs will be available through Crowley’s tenants and their contractors. To prepare the workforce for this emerging industry, Crowley has partnered with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Salem High School to provide career training.

The development of the Salem Offshore Wind Terminal signifies a significant step towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for Massachusetts. The project highlights the state’s commitment to promoting renewable energy sources and creating economic opportunities in the process. By repurposing an existing site and leveraging public-private partnerships, the terminal serves as a model for sustainable development and a testament to the potential of offshore wind energy to power the future.
