British entrepreneur Tom Skinner partnered with McDonald’s UK to promote their ‘Mix ‘n Match’ deal through unconventional sales tactics. In a bid to grab people’s attention, he employed various attention-grabbing techniques such as spinning a giant arrow sign, standing on a soapbox to shout, and marching around with a sandwich board. These antics were a response to a study commissioned by McDonald’s UK, which revealed that 21% of adults regularly walk around engrossed in their phones or paying little attention to their surroundings. The study found that 31% of adults have missed unusual happenings near them due to being distracted by their surroundings. Despite the prevalence of smartphone distraction, 45% of those surveyed said they would still ignore special food offers like lunch deals, even when they notice them. Common reasons for ignoring these offers include skepticism about savings, perceived catches, and complexity. Skinner’s tactics were successful in gathering a crowd and entertaining them with his cheeky sense of humor. He emphasized the need to stand out and attract attention in today’s distracted environment.
