Allendale, MI – Sam Leck etched his name into Grand Valley State baseball lore on Saturday afternoon. The senior right-hander hurled a complete game no-hitter against Wayne State, becoming the eighth Laker in program history to accomplish the feat.
Leck, a Sturgis native, needed just 89 pitches to navigate the seven-inning affair. He struck out five batters, walked three, and hit one batter in a 5-1 victory.
The no-hitter is the first for Grand Valley State since 2015 and the first by a right-hander since 2009. It is also the first no-hitter in the Lakers’ Division I era, which began in 2010.
Leck’s performance was a dominant one. He threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of the 27 batters he faced and induced 11 groundouts.
The Lakers’ offense provided Leck with just enough support. They scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Jake Collins and added another run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Alec Berkenpas.
Grand Valley State added two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Collins. The Lakers’ final run came in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Berkenpas.
The win was the Lakers’ fourth in a row and improved their record to 12-6 overall and 5-1 in the GLIAC. Wayne State fell to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC.
