Sam Walker’s dazzling performance propelled the Sydney Roosters to a resounding 60-18 victory over the St. George Illawarra Dragons at Allianz Stadium on Thursday night.
Last year’s omission from the Anzac Day classic seemed like a distant memory as Walker played a key role in his team’s most impressive attacking display of the season. He set up three tries, scored one himself, and converted all ten of his attempts for a personal haul of 24 points.
The Dragons suffered a setback in the opening minutes when Moses Suli was knocked out defending a kick-off return. Despite taking an early lead through Jaydn Su’A, the Saints were outplayed for the majority of the match.
Walker orchestrated the Roosters’ relentless attacking onslaught, with Nat Butcher, Angus Crichton, Joey Manu, and Luke Keary all crossing the try line. A penalty try was also awarded when Fa’amanu Brown illegally prevented Walker from grounding the ball.
The Dragons’ faint hopes of a comeback were extinguished as the Roosters continued to pile on the points in the second half. Manu, Butcher, James Tedesco, and Joseph Suaalii added further tries to complete the rout.
This comprehensive victory was a testament to Sam Walker’s resurgence and the Roosters’ growing confidence. It marked a significant low point for the Dragons under Shane Flanagan, who have now conceded 50 points in a match for the first time this season.
