Rumors surrounding the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 suggest that it may utilize a surprisingly outdated chipset. A Geekbench test entry reveals that the device will likely run on the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset as its predecessor, the Z Flip 5, instead of the anticipated Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. This chipset is also found in the Galaxy S24 series. However, the listing suggests an increase in memory to 12GB RAM, a departure from the 8GB RAM used in all previous Z Flip models.
Intriguingly, the same model number has previously appeared on Geekbench with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip but only 8GB of RAM, indicating that Samsung may be experimenting with various performance packages for the Z Flip 6. However, such experimentation seems untimely, considering the device’s expected launch within the next couple of months.
This is not the first unexpected chip rumor regarding this year’s Galaxy Z Flip. Earlier reports suggested the possibility of an Exynos 2400 chip for some regions, which is Samsung’s current in-house flagship chipset rather than the Snapdragon chip used last year.
If the Galaxy Z Flip 6 or one of its variants does indeed come with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, it likely won’t be a significant detriment to the device. Outright performance is arguably not as high a priority for the Galaxy Z Flip series as it is for Samsung’s other flagship phones. Additionally, Samsung’s AI works well on the Gen 2 silicon, as evidenced by recent updates, ensuring that any new generative AI features will function smoothly on the device.
However, it is reasonable to expect that a Gen 2-powered Z Flip would be more affordable than it would have been with the Gen 3. This would be a wise move, especially considering the pressure Samsung is facing from cheaper foldables like the Motorola Razr 2023 and the Nubia Flip 5G.
For now, this remains speculation, and the full truth about the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 (along with the possibility of an Ultra or FE Z Fold model) will likely be revealed this summer, assuming Samsung follows its previous launch schedules. With the foldable phone market becoming increasingly competitive, it will be interesting to see how Samsung maintains its dominance in the category.
