The San Bernardino Animal Shelter is in need of assistance as it prepares to expand its services to three additional cities. Starting July 1st, the shelter will be responsible for animal services in Fontana, Colton, and Rialto, which will significantly increase the number of animals under its care. Kristine Watson, director of the San Bernardino Animal Services Department, emphasized the urgent need for community involvement through adoption and fostering. With the addition of these three cities, the shelter anticipates a doubling of its current animal population, bringing the estimated intake to 12,000 dogs and cats annually. To address this growth, the shelter plans to utilize temporary kennels and shelters while exploring the construction of a larger facility in the coming years. Additionally, 31 new staff positions will be created to facilitate adoptions and foster partnerships with rescue organizations. Funding for the expansion has been partially provided by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, with the remaining costs to be shared among the participating cities. San Bernardino will cover approximately 53% of the expenses, with the other five cities contributing proportionately less. To accommodate the expanded services, the shelter will extend its hours and operate seven days a week for the convenience of residents.
