Nestled amidst the picturesque town of Taormina, the San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel, is renowned for its exceptional blend of history and art. Boasting an esteemed collection of over 500 classic and contemporary artworks, the hotel recently welcomed a captivating new addition from Sicilian artist Sergio Fiorentino, titled ‘Greek Fragment.’ This poignant painting will be unveiled on May 8, 2024, within the enchanting Ancient Cloister.
Sergio Fiorentino, an artist of international acclaim, is celebrated for his unique style that seamlessly weaves together classical and religious iconography against the backdrop of his Sicilian roots. His works are characterized by vibrant colors and evocative textures, capturing the essence of his homeland.
‘Greek Fragment’ is part of a series that portrays figures with Hellenistic features, transcending time. These figures appear ethereal, often genderless and faceless, enveloped in Fiorentino’s signature intense blue. This color, reminiscent of water or amniotic fluid, evokes a sense of suspension beyond the boundaries of time and space. The faces in the paintings possess a stone-like texture, achieved through Fiorentino’s masterful manipulation of wet paint, adding a three-dimensional quality further enhanced by a golden aura.
The addition of ‘Greek Fragment’ is not Fiorentino’s first contribution to the San Domenico Palace’s art collection. ‘Portrait of a Saint’ graces the Bar & Choistro area, while another ‘Portrait of a Saint’ adorns the San Domenico Suite. However, for the majestic four-part ‘Frammento Greco,’ Fiorentino selected the Ancient Cloister, the hotel’s oldest section dating back to the late 14th century.
Expressing his delight about the collaboration, Fiorentino stated, “I am honored to exhibit my works in a place that has been frequented by great artists throughout history. The photographer Baron Wilhelm Von Gloeden captured Taormina’s beauty through his en plein air photographs, and today, my canvases add color to the Ancient Cloister. The enduring thread of art continues to weave its way through the centuries.”
Beyond the unveiling, the San Domenico Palace offers guests an exclusive art experience, ‘Behind the Scenes of Noto,’ where they can delve deeper into Fiorentino’s artistic world. This experience includes a visit to his studio in Noto, a guided tour of Noto’s baroque landmarks, and a delightful lunch hosted by an art connoisseur.
In Sicily, where art and history intertwine harmoniously, the San Domenico Palace takes pride in showcasing the island’s rich heritage. The ‘Greek Fragment’ serves as a testament to this legacy, offering guests a captivating glimpse into the diverse cultural influences that have shaped this extraordinary destination.
