Ivar C. Satero, the esteemed Director of San Francisco International Airport (SFO), has declared his intention to retire at the conclusion of 2024. Satero has held the esteemed position of Airport Director since 2016, guiding SFO through a period of transformative growth and innovation.
During his tenure, SFO has welcomed 26 new international airlines and established 25 new international destinations. SFO’s international growth has been remarkable, and it was the fastest-growing U.S. airport for international travel prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under Satero’s leadership, SFO has surpassed pre-pandemic flight levels, demonstrating its resilience and commitment to global connectivity.
SFO has also distinguished itself as a leader in environmental sustainability under Satero’s guidance. The airport has implemented nationally recognized sustainability initiatives, including a ban on plastic bottle sales, setting a global precedent. SFO is also a leader in the utilization of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), receiving over 10 million gallons in 2023. These initiatives underscore SFO’s commitment to minimizing its environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices.
Passenger amenities have also been a focus for Satero. Under his leadership, SFO has expanded its offerings with the acclaimed Grand Hyatt at SFO and the groundbreaking Harvey Milk Terminal 1, the world’s first terminal to honor an LGBTQ+ advocate. SFO continues to invest in its facilities, with $11B allocated for projects over the next five years. These investments will ensure the resilience of SFO’s critical infrastructure and deliver a world-class airport experience for passengers.
Satero’s career with the City & County of San Francisco spans several decades, beginning in 1984 as an engineering intern. He has held various roles within the airport, including Deputy Airport Director for Design & Construction Division and Chief Operating Officer. Satero’s extensive experience and dedication to SFO have been instrumental in its success and recognition as a leading airport.
