The political landscape in India is once again heated with the latest exchange between Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan and Tamil Nadu Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, centered on the controversial issue of Sanatana Dharma.
Kalyan, known for his strong stance on religious matters, fired back at Stalin’s previous remarks comparing Sanatana Dharma to diseases like dengue, malaria, and coronavirus, by stating that “Sanatana Dharma cannot be wiped out.” This strong response was made following Stalin’s comparison of Sanatana Dharma to diseases, a statement that triggered a nationwide political controversy last year.
The DMK spokesperson, Dr Syed Hafeezullah, responded to Kalyan’s statement by clarifying that the party does not engage in discussions about any religion, particularly Hinduism, but continues to advocate against caste-based discrimination, untouchability, and caste hierarchy. In contrast, Stalin’s response was curt, simply stating, “Let’s wait and see.”
Kalyan, in a recent event, called for a national law to protect Sanatana Dharma and prevent any actions that could undermine its beliefs. He proposed the establishment of a “Sanatana Dharma Protection Board” at both the national and state level to oversee the implementation of this law and suggested that annual funds be allocated to support the board’s operations.
Furthermore, Kalyan proposed the implementation of a Sanatana Dharma Certification, which would ensure the purity of materials used in temples, particularly in offerings and prasadam (sacred food). He also called for a united front against individuals or organizations that spread hate or defame Sanatana Dharma.
Kalyan’s remarks were made in the context of his “Prayashchit Diksha,” a spiritual commitment to lead the Sanatana Dharma Parikshana Trust. He highlighted the recent desecration of temples and vandalism of religious figures, emphasizing the need for a strong response and a unified approach to address these issues.
This latest exchange between Kalyan and Stalin has further fueled the debate surrounding Sanatana Dharma, highlighting the complex and sensitive nature of religious beliefs and their role in the political landscape.
