Virat Kohli’s decision to step down as India’s Test captain in January 2022 surprised many fans, including former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar. Speaking on ‘The Rao Podcast’, Bangar expressed his belief that Kohli should have continued leading the team in red-ball cricket for a longer period.
Bangar highlighted Kohli’s remarkable achievements as captain, pointing out that he had led India in 68 Test matches, securing 40 victories with an impressive win percentage of 58.82. Kohli’s captaincy has been marked by several historic triumphs, including India’s maiden Test series win in Australia in 2018, victories in the West Indies, reaching the top spot in the Test rankings, and reaching the inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final in 2021.
His leadership was particularly impressive at home, where he won 24 out of 31 Tests played in India. Following Kohli’s decision, Rohit Sharma was named India’s captain across all formats. Both Kohli and Rohit subsequently stepped down from T20I captaincy after India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Suryakumar Yadav now leads the team in T20Is, while Rohit continues to captain India in ODIs and Test cricket.
