Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Heeramandi’: A Grandiose Set to Depict the Lives of Courtesans

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, renowned for his grand cinematic sets, has crafted an awe-inspiring stage for his latest period drama series, ‘Heeramandi’. This ambitious project, set in the pre-independence era, explores the intriguing world of tawaifs (courtesans).

The sprawling three-acre set, constructed over seven meticulous months, transports viewers to the heart of Heera Mandi, Lahore’s famed red-light district. The Shahi Mahal, the opulent palace of Mallikajaan (played by Manisha Koirala), serves as the centerpiece of this elaborate tableau.

Every intricate detail of the set whispers of the era’s rich aesthetics. Mughal miniature paintings, frescoes, colonial portraits, and exquisite filigree work adorn the walls and furnishings. Handmade enamel carvings grace the floors, and delicately etched wooden doors create an air of authenticity.

Bhansali, a master of visual storytelling, believes that architecture plays a pivotal role in filmmaking. He has meticulously designed the set to not merely provide a backdrop but to actively engage in the narrative, immersing the audience in the world of Heeramandi.

The series, featuring a stellar cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Sharmin Segal, is co-directed by Bhansali and Mitakshara Kumar. ‘Heeramandi’ promises to be a visually stunning and emotionally evocative journey into a bygone era.
