Former Republican George Santos has withdrawn from the race for New York’s 1st Congressional District as an independent candidate. The disgraced ex-Congressman announced his withdrawal on Tuesday, stating that his decision was made to avoid splitting the vote and potentially handing the seat to Democrats.
Santos, infamously booted from Congress in November over numerous lies told to constituents, had initially considered a return as an independent after his split with the GOP. He ultimately committed to the run in early March before withdrawing just weeks later.
Despite his withdrawal, Santos insisted that it’s not the end of his political career. He expressed his willingness to “step up to the plate and go fight for my country” in the future, leaving the door open for another return.
In his withdrawal statement, Santos also took a parting shot at incumbent Republican Nick LaLota, whom he criticized for his “abysmal record.” However, he emphasized that he wanted to avoid being responsible for handing the house to Democrats.
Santos’s withdrawal is a significant development in the race for New York’s 1st Congressional District. It remains to be seen how his decision will impact the outcome of the election. However, his statement suggests that he intends to remain active in politics in the future.
