Sarah Burton Appointed as New Creative Director of Givenchy

British designer Sarah Burton has been appointed as the new creative director of Givenchy, succeeding Matthew Williams who left the brand in December 2023. The news was confirmed by WWD, which reported that Burton will be introduced to the employees of Givenchy’s iconic ateliers on Avenue George V this week. This follows a historical tradition at Givenchy.

Burton is expected to unveil her first designs for the fashion house in March 2025 during Paris Fashion Week. “It is a great honor to join this wonderful house, it is a gem. I am very excited to be able to write the next chapter of this iconic house and bring my own vision, sensitivity and beliefs to Givenchy,” Burton said in a statement shared with WWD.

Sidney Toledano, chairman of the board at Givenchy, expressed his excitement about Burton’s appointment. “Sarah Burton is an exceptional creative talent whose work I have passionately followed for many years. I am delighted that she is joining Givenchy today,” he said in the statement. Toledano highlighted Burton’s unique vision and approach, adding, “I am convinced that her creative leadership will contribute to the future success and international prestige of the house.”

Burton’s appointment marks a significant step in her career. She has been closely associated with Alexander McQueen since the beginning of her career. After graduating from Central Saint Martins, she became McQueen’s right-hand woman until his passing in 2010. Following McQueen’s death, Burton took over as creative director of the brand, cementing her position as a prominent figure in the fashion world. Her expertise and vision are anticipated to bring a fresh perspective and renewed energy to Givenchy.
