Saskatchewan Seeding Progress: Over Half of Crop in Ground Despite Delays

Seeding in Saskatchewan has made substantial progress, with 56 percent of the 2024 crop now in the ground. This represents an increase from 32 percent last week but still falls short of the five-year average of 76 percent and the ten-year average of 74 percent. Seeding has been most advanced in the southwest, northwest, and southeast regions of the province, with completion rates of 64 percent, 63 percent, and 61 percent, respectively. The east-central region has completed 54 percent of seeding, followed by the northeast and west-central regions at 48 percent and 47 percent, respectively. The recent progress in seeding comes after many regions experienced delays due to rainfall. The Mossbank area received the highest reported rainfall at 58 mm, followed by Meadow Lake and Choiceland at 52 mm and 51 mm. While the rain has helped improve topsoil moisture levels and growing conditions, producers are hoping for a break in precipitation to allow seeding to continue. Early seeded crops throughout the province are beginning to emerge, with overall good emergence reported. However, there have been some reports of crop damage due to frost, minor flooding, wind, hail, cutworms, wireworms, and flea beetles. Despite the challenges, rainfall has led to an improvement in topsoil moisture, with cropland topsoil moisture rated at six percent surplus and hayland topsoil moisture at three percent surplus. Pasture conditions across the province are generally favorable, with 12 percent rated excellent and 55 percent good.
