Saskatchewan Unveils Stricter Penalties for Excessive Speeding and Stunting Starting Wednesday

Saskatchewan Introduces Tougher Penalties for Dangerous Driving

Drivers in Saskatchewan who engage in reckless behaviors such as speeding excessively, stunting, or racing will face stricter consequences starting Wednesday. These enhanced penalties, introduced in October 2022, include a mandatory 30-day vehicle impoundment and a seven-day license suspension for first-time offenses.

Speeding excessively is defined as driving 50 km/h or more over the speed limit or double the posted limit. In addition to the impoundment and license suspension, offenders will also face increased fines.

The fine for stunting has been raised to $580 from $150, while a first offense for street racing now carries a penalty of $580 (up from $205). Second offenses for street racing are subject to a fine of $1,400, and third or subsequent offenses will result in a fine of $2,100.

The Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has outlined specific actions that could lead to fines, impoundment, and license suspension. These actions include:

* Stopping or slowing to interfere with the movement of other vehicles
* Speeding in and out of lanes to unsafely pass vehicles
* Chasing other vehicles

The enhanced penalties are part of the province’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and reduce the number of traffic-related deaths and injuries. SGI emphasizes that these penalties are not intended to punish drivers but rather to deter dangerous driving behaviors and protect the public.
