A group of passionate Saskatoon students embarked on a mission to bring the urgency of climate change to the forefront of policymakers’ and educators’ minds. Through a captivating youth speaker series, they voiced their concerns and implored decision-makers to take meaningful action towards environmental protection.
Summer Williams, one of the student speakers, shared her transformative experience in outdoor learning courses that awakened her to the environmental crisis unfolding around her. She expressed her deep care for the planet, questioning why society would treat it so poorly.
The speakers emphasized the importance of youth perspectives in shaping a brighter future. They implored policymakers to recognize the impending effects of climate change on their generation and prioritize climate action now.
Another student, Leia Dustyhorn, echoed the sentiments of her peers, expressing the hope that their voices would be heard and the reasons behind their advocacy would be understood.
Michael Prebble, a Saskatoon teacher, praised the students’ initiative and activism. He noted that the classroom discussions provided a balanced perspective, but it was the students who took the lead in advocating for their beliefs.
The speaker series is part of an ongoing effort to educate the public about climate change and inspire action. The students believe that their voices, combined with the knowledge they have acquired, can make a real difference in shaping a sustainable future for themselves and generations to come.
